Why Global Brands Are Investing Heavily in Immersive Commerce

If you woke up from a 25 year coma, you'd probably be shocked to find so many changes in the world, primarily in the technology sector. A lot of things wouldn't make sense to you, such as the presence of the internet in everyone's phones and the fact that almost everything can be purchased online, from a slice of cheesecake to cars, you can buy it all.

How did we get here? Well it started with electronic books and travel tickets where 'touching' the item beforehand wasn't necessary. Then came the arrival of smartphones which completely changed the game and gave consumers an "anywhere, anytime" habit. The shift went from an approximate annual E-commerce sale of $27.6 Billion in the year to 2000 to approx $1.23 Trillion in the year 2025. THAT IS A 4,356.52% INCREASE!

That didn't happen by chance, companies like Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, Apple and many more adapted perfectly to the situation. I have broken them down into specific eras based on the habits of consumers and adaptations of brands to cater to them

Search & Source (2000–2009):

In the early days, internet users only bought online if they had a specific product in mind. Advertising was entirely reactive, relying on users actively seeking something out. Brands like Amazon and eBay pioneered basic algorithmic product recommendations ("Customers who bought this also bought..."). The launch of Google Adwords changed everything for E-commerce.

Scroll & Stumble (2010–2019):

The smartphone changed consumer behavior: People were shopping from anywhere. Advertising shifted from capturing existing intent to creating desire. This era gave us what we now call Social Media Marketing. This was the golden age of the tracking pixel. Facebook allowed e-commerce brands to target highly specific demographic buckets

See & Swipe (2020–2026):

Today, advertising is no longer about driving traffic to a website. The ad is the storefront. By turning passive ad viewers into active participants, brands aren't just gaining impressions; they are removing the single biggest barrier to online shopping: "Will this look good on me?" or "Will this fit in my space?" With the help of Augmented reality, and Gen AI.

Augmented Reality (AR) was treated as a gimmicky post-purchase feature hidden deep inside a company's app. Today, platforms have weaponized AR at the top of the marketing funnel right inside the ad itself. Brands are looking for ways to give consumers an immersive experience Through AR and Generative AI. Modern e-commerce advertising doesn't just ask you to imagine owning a product: it renders the product in your hands, on your face, or in your room, and uses AI to write a personalized sales pitch unique to your psychology. Globally almost 80% of the top-tier retail brands are utilizing AR features to increase engagement, virtual try-ons and/or 3D product visualizations. In industries like beauty and cosmetics, AR has transitioned from a luxury to "table stakes." Today, more than 43% of online consumers expect all beauty brands to provide instant AR-powered tools for skin-tone analysis or virtual makeup try-ons.

A Shopify study analyzing millions of storefronts revealed that implementing 3D AR product previews, enabling customers to virtually "place" items in their environment or try them on, results in a significant conversion rate increase of 94% to 101%. This technology effectively doubles the probability of a purchase when compared to traditional static imagery.

If you own or work with an E-commerce brand you already know that returns are the silent killer of e-commerce profitability. When consumers use interactive AR try-ons to verify sizing or map furniture dimensions accurately to their rooms before hitting buy, product return rates drop by an average of 31%.

We are officially leaving the era of flat retail behind. The future of online purchasing isn't about looking at a grid of product photos on a 2D glass screen; it's about spatial reality, conversational artificial intelligence, and personalized simulation.

As Generative AI eliminates creative boundaries and Augmented Reality destroys the customer's "imagination gap," the line between advertising and the checkout lane will completely vanish. The advertisement won't just tell you about a product: it will place it in your hands, test it on your skin, or drop it into your living room.

For brands, advertisers, and builders, the mandate is clear: Adapt or become a relic. If you are still relying on the passive, one-size-fits-all strategies of the past, you are competing in a world that no longer exists. The next era of e-commerce belongs to those who don't just show a product, but create an experience.

At AR Bangladesh, we are actively bringing this frontier home, rewriting the local e-commerce sector by letting consumers virtually try on products before they buy. By eliminating the guesswork, we are building ultimate consumer trust and tackling the industry's high return rates.

The infrastructure is scaling, and the technology is here. The only question left is: Will Bangladesh adapt?
